The Academy

Where the training happens

WightTricks is a dedicated tricking and acrobatics academy on the Isle of Wight - built specifically for this style of training, from the floor up.

The WightTricks squad at the academy

Our story

Founded by athletes who saw a gap on the Isle of Wight for serious movement training, WightTricks has grown into a community of hundreds of young athletes - many of whom now compete nationally and internationally.

We also host Flip The Island, one of the UK's biggest tricking events, right here at our home gym.

The facility

A specialist academy for a specialist sport

The right surfaces and equipment are what make progressive coaching possible - new skills can be learned in stages instead of attempted in one go.

Full sprung floor

Reduced impact and consistent take-offs for repeatable, quality practice.

Airfloor

Softer landings while new rotations and twists are being learned.

Trampoline

Air awareness and shape development before skills move to the floor.

Foam pit

A low-consequence environment for progressing unfamiliar skills.

Specialist movement equipment

Blocks, vaults, wall work and transitions that build strength, control and adaptability.

Underneath the tricks

Strength & conditioning

Tricking asks a lot of a body. Our strength and conditioning work builds the physical qualities that make big skills possible - and repeatable - without guesswork.

Mobility

Usable range through hips, shoulders and spine so shapes are achievable, not forced.

Control

Owning positions under load and on landing, rather than relying on momentum.

Coordination

Timing limbs, rotation and take-off so skills repeat the same way every time.

Power

Take-off speed, jump height and elastic strength developed progressively.

Resilience

Tendon, joint and landing conditioning to reduce avoidable overload.

Awareness

Knowing where the body is in the air, and how to correct it mid-skill.

S&C is programmed by Robbie Bates, a tricker and sports scientist, and scaled to age and stage. Younger athletes build it inside their normal class; older and pathway athletes can train it as a dedicated session.

In the room

The training environment

Coached, not supervised

Every session is planned and led. Athletes are given specific work, not free time on a mat.

Grouped by stage

Age and ability groupings keep the level of challenge appropriate for everyone in the room.

Parent friendly

A viewing area and café on site - spectating is genuinely encouraged.

Calm and standards-led

A focused floor where students know what's expected of them and of us.
